"Power" crisis

I am no expert to on global oil prices. But, I know the oil price vagaries can cause inflation in economies and therefore I wish the price stays low. Over the last week, heavy downpours and strong winds have resulted in electricity problems (flip side is we may not have water crisis hopefully) in many areas in Bangalore. As our locality is full of apartments and they all have gen sets, we didn’t feel the pinch as much. However, it pains to know that so much diesel is burnt to lit apartments. Coming back from office, I noticed all the apartments had their gensets on and started worrying about us all pushing the global oil prices by doing so (sounds silly I know). My weird thought didn’t stop there. This was a week when Iceland volcanic ash kept thousands of flights on the ground. I consoled myself that the savings in airline turbine fuel would offset the diesel we burn in our place due to power cuts. :P

Media was at it’s dubious best by focusing more time on Sania Mirza and Lalit Modi than other important things like the beginning of BPL census and so on. IPL has got very obscene off the field. One would like to use the Zoom channel’s tag line of “100% bollywood” for IPL as well. Personally I don’t rate Lalit Modi high. He didn’t do anything great and hence doesn’t deserve one bit the hype and accolade. Anything you do with cricket in India will be a hit and therefore one can’t credit Modi for creating IPL. Even T20 as a format wasn’t his idea. Recently there was an article in Hindu by the great P.Sainath that touched on the lavishness of the IPL. He laments, while the rest of the country is facing power-cuts (esp rural India), the IPL guys get so much of power as all the matches are day-night (Can’t imagine IPL being played in scorching day heat). Knowing him, he may even abstain from watching IPL on tv. It’s very difficult for ordinary people like me to take a strong stand like he takes on such issues. As much I love our country (esp Rural India) to prosper and have uninterrupted power supply, it’s difficult to stop watching IPL. Hope there is a win-win somewhere. :-)
